Delegates & Chaperones
Prepare to be part of an unforgettable experience!
Every part of GOV – from the activities and entertainment to the workshops – has been purposely selected to make every delegate’s experience at GOV exciting and fun. GOV’s main goal for delegates is to add value to their personal journey and to help them see how they can contribute to the growth of their local communities.
Delegates
To attend GOV as a delegate, you must:
👦👧🏽Be no younger than 14 and no older than 24 by March 18, 2025
🪶 Self-identify as Indigenous
🧑🏾🤝🧑🏽Attend with a chaperone if you are under 18
GOV guidelines revolve around respect:
Respect for all participants at the event including Elders, delegates, chaperones, volunteers, guests, presenters, and service personnel. This includes respecting everyone’s social and cultural values.
Respect for the people whose communities and territories we are hosted by.
Respect for the regulations and standards of BCAAFC, the venue, and host community.
Everyone has the right to be respected and have fun
Attendee Rules
- GOV is a safe space and no violence of any kind will be tolerated. Please report any violence, bullying, or harassment to staff ASAP.
- No substance use on the premises including but not limited to alcohol, vapes, smoking and other recreational substances.
- All attendees at GOV agree to abide by the rules and guidelines for behaviour, including wearing wristband and nametag at all GOV events.
- Attendees who have been asked to leave a previous GOV due to a breach of conduct are not able to attend GOV again unless they have worked with BCAAFC staff to address the conduct concern and been approved to attend. Group owners are responsible for ensuring that all group members do not have any outstanding concerns
- Criminal record checks are required for anyone over 18 attending GOV; failure to provide a CRC by the deadline could result in not being admitted to the event.
* The exception to this policy is the cultural and ceremonial use of Indigenous traditional medicines such as tobacco, sage, cedar, and sweet grass. The GOV team needs to pre-approve the use of these before the event. If you plan on using any plant medicines, please email: [email protected].
Chaperones
A chaperone is the primary adult contact for youth under 18 years old at the event. They are responsible for ALL members of their group (regardless of age). While GOV is intended for youth ages 14-24, chaperones are required to purchase a ticket and to register with their delegate(s). Chaperones are encouraged to join in activities when allowed – we want chaperones to have fun too!
Duties of a Chaperone
21+ Years Old
Chaperones must be 21 years or older and submit a clean criminal record check.
1:5 Chaperone to Youth Ratio
One chaperone is required for every five delegates under the age of 18 years old. Chaperones may not supervise more than one group of five.
Travel Support
Help youth travel to and from the event.
Registration
Ensure that the registration details for their group are complete.
Attend our Training
We’ll offer an engagement session to answer your questions and offer tried and true tips from previous chaperones so you feel equipped and ready to support your group!
Workshops
Assist youth in selecting and locating workshops and arriving in a timely manner, and ensure youth remain in their workshop until their session is complete.
Emergency Contact
Provide BCAAFC with the emergency information for their group/delegates. BCAAFC will verify contacts to ensure they are correct and can be used if needed.
Presence
Be with youth during all evening activities (opening ceremonies, talent show, dance) as there is a ‘no re-entry’ policy once the performance begins.
Ensure Safety
Ensure your group follows the above rules and guidelines . We want everyone to have fun and be safe!
Role Model
All chaperones must be a positive role model and set positive examples for all youth.
Extra Support
Provide any additional support to their delegates during the event.
Curfew
We strongly encourage chaperones ensure delegates return to their accommodations by 11:30 p.m for their safety and a fun event for all.
